Why it matters
Inflation is high, but second-round effects look limited. Eurozone inflation rose to 3.7% in September. Danske Bank notes that the spillover from energy costs into underlying inflation remains very muted, and that firms’ selling-price expectations in services and retail have even declined. Danske dropped its earlier call for an October hike because recent comments from policymakers have been less hawkish.
Policymakers are divided on the pace. Lagarde has called the energy shock too large to ignore, but says a measured response is appropriate. Chief economist Philip Lane has stressed a meeting-by-meeting approach and noted that higher long-term yields already tighten financial conditions. Isabel Schnabel and Joachim Nagel lean hawkish.
French bond stress is the wild card. France’s 10-year yield has climbed above 5%, and the French–German spread hit its widest since 2011 in early October. Markets will watch whether this pushes the ECB toward a more dovish tone. ING argues it shouldn’t, and expects the ECB to keep December open.

Three EUR/USD scenarios
| Scenario | What it looks like | Likely EUR/USD reaction |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Neutral hold (base case) | Rates unchanged. Lagarde keeps all options open with no firm guidance, and December stays live. | A limited reaction is likely, with the pair driven more by the Fed and US data. ING sees scope for EUR/USD to recover toward 1.120–1.130 in the coming weeks if there is no dovish pivot. |
| 2. Hawkish hold | Rates unchanged, but Lagarde stresses inflation risks and signals December clearly. | The euro is likely to firm. With heavy speculative short positions, a short squeeze above 1.1200 is possible. A hawkish tone could also widen French spreads. |
| 3. Dovish tilt | Lagarde puts more weight on French bond stress, weaker growth or demand destruction, raising doubts about December. | The euro may weaken. A break below the 2026 low of 1.1113 would bring the 1.1000 area into focus. |
An October hike is very unlikely according to market pricing, but it would be a strong euro-positive surprise.

Positioning: Speculators hold a large net short position in euro futures, about 134,500 contracts as of 20 October, near the bottom of a three-year range. Crowded positioning can amplify moves if the ECB surprises hawkishly.
Impact on Indian traders
EUR/INR: EUR/INR is listed on NSE and moves with both EUR/USD and USD/INR. A hawkish ECB that lifts EUR/USD would support EUR/INR. A dovish tilt would weigh on it. The ECB decision and press conference fall at 18:45–19:15 IST, after the NSE currency segment closes at 17:00 IST, so the reaction will show at the 09:00 IST open on Friday, 30 October.
EUR/USD on NSE: EUR/USD is available as an exchange-traded cross on NSE, alongside GBP/USD and USD/JPY. Indian traders can also use USD/INR, GBP/INR and JPY/INR. Trading forex with unauthorised offshore platforms is not permitted under FEMA.
The Fed comes first: The FOMC decides at 23:30 IST on 28 October. A hawkish Fed could already push EUR/USD lower before the ECB speaks.
With two central banks and major US data in about 20 hours, risk sentiment could swing sharply. Our Risk-On / Risk-Off Meter can help you gauge the mood before you trade.
