Key points for GBP USD Outlook

  • UK CPI rose to 3.5% y/y in September, up from 3.1% in August and its highest rate since October 2025.
  • The forecast was 3.4%. Core CPI rose to 2.8%, against 2.7% expected.
  • GBP/USD barely moved, trading near 1.3370–1.3373 after Tuesday’s rally above 1.3400.
  • Next up: the FOMC (28 Oct) and the Bank of England decision on 5 November, where a rate hike is widely expected.

What happened

The Office for National Statistics released September inflation data at 07:00 UK time (11:30 IST) on Wednesday, 21 October. Headline and core inflation both came in above forecasts.

UK CPI (September 2026) Actual Forecast Previous (August)
CPI y/y 3.5% 3.4% 3.1%
CPI m/m 0.4% 0.3% 0.5%
Core CPI y/y 2.8% 2.7% 2.6%
Services CPI y/y TBC TBC 3.4%

Transport was the largest contributor, with prices up 6.6% on the year. The ONS said motor fuel inflation was at its highest since August 2022. Its chief economist, Grant Fitzner, said inflation had climbed notably to its highest annual rate in almost a year.

Other measures also rose. Core CPIH reached 3.1%, up from 2.9%, and RPI inflation was 3.9%. UK inflation is now above France (3.4%) and Germany (3.3%).

Why it matters

The Bank of England is close to hiking. The BoE has held Bank Rate at 3.75% so far this year. At its September meeting, the vote was 6–3, with three members wanting an immediate rise to 4.0%. The committee warned that inflation would rise further, mainly because of higher energy prices linked to the Middle East conflict.

Inflation is spreading beyond fuel. The rise in core CPI suggests energy costs are feeding into wider prices. On Tuesday, MPC member Megan Greene warned of upside inflation risks and said second-round effects could start to appear.

The jobs market is holding up. Stronger-than-expected UK jobs data on Tuesday pushed traders to price a more aggressive BoE. A hike at the early-November meeting is now overwhelmingly expected.

Market reaction

  • GBP/USD: On Tuesday, the pair gained about 0.5% and reached its highest level since mid-September, above 1.3400. After the hot CPI print, it traded flat near 1.3370 in the European morning, and was 0.08% lower at 1.3373 at one point.
  • Why the muted reaction: Much of the BoE hike was already priced in before the data. September public sector net borrowing also rose to £24.52 billion from £17.25 billion, which may have revived concerns about UK debt and capped the pound.
  • US dollar: The dollar index has traded near 102, supported by expectations of a Fed hike in December.

Key levels to watch

Level Zone Why it matters
Resistance 1.3450 Top of the expected post-CPI range
Resistance 1.3400 Tuesday’s one-month high; the first barrier for buyers
Current ~1.3370 Trading level after CPI
Support 1.3275 Bottom of the expected range
Support 1.3200 Next downside zone if BoE hike bets fade

Possible scenarios:

  • If BoE hike expectations firm further and GBP/USD closes above 1.3400, a move toward 1.3450 is likely to come into focus.
  • If the Fed sounds hawkish next week or UK fiscal worries grow, the pair may slip back toward 1.3275.
  • If neither happens, GBP/USD may stay between 1.3275 and 1.3450 until the 5 November BoE decision.

Impact on Indian traders

GBP/INR: GBP/INR is listed on NSE’s currency derivatives segment, so UK data reaches Indian traders directly. GBP/INR moves with both GBP/USD and USD/INR. A firmer pound on BoE hike bets would lift GBP/INR, while a stronger rupee would pull it the other way.

USD/INR: The rupee is mainly driven by the US dollar, crude oil and RBI action. With Brent near $110 and US yields above 5%, the pressure on the rupee remains.

Cross pairs on NSE: GBP/USD itself is available as an exchange-traded cross on NSE, alongside EUR/USD and USD/JPY. Indian traders can also use USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR and JPY/INR. Trading forex with unauthorised offshore platforms is not permitted under FEMA.
