Key points for uk cpi gbp usd
- UK CPI rose to 3.5% y/y in September, an 11-month high. The forecast was 3.4%, and August was 3.1%.
- Services inflation jumped to 3.7%, above the 3.6% forecast, which points to wider price pressure beyond fuel.
- GBP/USD edged up to around 1.3390–1.3406, but it has not closed above 1.3400 since mid-September.
- A 25 bp BoE hike to 4.00% on 5 November is close to fully priced. The UK Budget and the Fed decision both fall on 28 October.
What happened
The Office for National Statistics released the September data at 07:00 UK time (11:30 IST) on Wednesday, 21 October. Headline inflation rose for a third straight month.
| UK inflation (September 2026) | Actual | Forecast | Previous (August) |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPI y/y | 3.5% | 3.4% | 3.1% |
| CPI m/m | 0.4% | 0.3% | 0.5% |
| Core CPI y/y | 2.8% | 2.7% | 2.6% |
| Services CPI y/y | 3.7% | 3.6% | 3.4% |
| Goods CPI y/y | 3.2% | – | 2.7% |
| CPIH y/y | 3.6% | – | 3.3% |
Fuel was the main driver. Motor fuel prices were up 29.8% on the year, and transport made the largest contribution to the annual rate. The headline figure was also well above the Bank of England’s own 3.0% projection.

Why it matters
This was the last CPI print before the BoE votes. October’s inflation data comes out on 18 November, after the 5 November decision. That makes Wednesday’s report the final inflation reading the Monetary Policy Committee sees before it votes.
Services inflation is the key detail. Fuel-driven inflation could be a one-off. A rise in services inflation, however, suggests second-round effects, where higher energy costs start to push up wages and other prices. That is what would turn one hike into several.
The BoE expects inflation to rise further. The Bank forecasts inflation averaging 3.75% in Q4 2026 and 4% in Q1 2027. Bank Rate has been 3.75% all year. At the September meeting, three of nine members voted for an immediate hike.
Market reaction
- GBP/USD: The pound held steady to slightly firmer after the release, trading around 1.3394 on Wednesday, up about 0.16% on the day. On Thursday, 22 October, it rose to about 1.3406, and the pair is up roughly 1.3% over the past month.
- The 1.3400 cap: GBP/USD has not posted a daily close above 1.3400 since 15 September.
- BoE pricing: Markets priced a 98% chance of a 25 bp hike to 4.00% next month, according to LSEG data. Brown Brothers Harriman called the November hike pretty much a done deal.
- December hike odds: Later in the day, the odds of a second BoE hike by December fell to about 48%, from 58%.
- Why the pound didn’t jump: Most of the hike was priced in before the data. Higher-than-expected government borrowing in September also raised fiscal concerns ahead of next week’s Budget.
- Gilts: The pound and gilt yields moved little after the release.
BoE outlook: one hike or several?
A November hike is widely treated as settled. The open question is how far the BoE goes after that, and forecasters disagree.
- Market pricing: Swaps imply about 113 bp of BoE tightening over the next 12 months.
- BBH’s view: BBH thinks that is too much. It points to spare capacity in the economy, weak real wage growth, a Bank Rate already near the top of the BoE’s neutral range, and likely tighter fiscal policy after the 28 October Budget.
- Other forecasts: MUFG expects one hike in November, then a hold. Commerzbank expects hikes in November and February, taking Bank Rate to 4.25%.
What it means for GBP/USD: if markets scale back expected hikes beyond November, the pound could lose some support even after the BoE raises rates. If services inflation and wages stay hot, more hikes would likely support sterling.
Key levels to watch
| Level | Zone | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Resistance | 1.3450 | A daily close above this would mark a clear break higher |
| Resistance | 1.3410 | A decisive break could open a fresh upside leg |
| Pivot | ~1.3391–1.3400 | Wednesday’s close, just under the 1.3400 cap |
| Support | 1.3303 | 20-day EMA |
| Support | 1.3137 | 2026 low (14 October) |
Possible scenarios:
- If the Budget eases fiscal worries and BoE pricing holds, a daily close above 1.3410–1.3450 is likely to bring higher levels into focus.
- If the Budget raises debt concerns or the Fed sounds hawkish on 28 October, GBP/USD may slip back toward the 1.3303 EMA.

Impact on Indian traders
GBP/INR: GBP/INR is listed on NSE’s currency derivatives segment, so UK data reaches Indian traders directly. GBP/INR moves with both GBP/USD and USD/INR. BoE hike expectations support the GBP side, while the rupee’s direction depends on the dollar, crude and RBI action.
USD/INR: UK CPI has little direct effect on USD/INR. The Fed decision on 28 October matters far more for the rupee.
Cross pairs on NSE: GBP/USD is available as an exchange-traded cross on NSE, alongside EUR/USD and USD/JPY. Indian traders can also use USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR and JPY/INR. Trading forex with unauthorised offshore platforms is not permitted under FEMA.
