India Gold Demand Q3 2026 MCX Gold Impact: What WGC Data Shows

India gold demand Q3 2026

Key Takeaways

  • India’s gold demand fell 29% y/y to 162.5 tonnes in Q3 2026, but its value rose 3% to ₹2,41,900 crore (World Gold Council).
  • WGC sees 2026 demand at 625–675 tonnes, a six-year low.
  • After the duty rose to 15% in May, official imports collapsed and unofficial inflows jumped.
  • MCX gold still tracks dollar gold, USD/INR and Fed odds more than festive buying.

The India gold demand Q3 2026 MCX gold impact is the question on every bullion desk after the World Gold Council (WGC) released its Gold Demand Trends on Tuesday, 3 November. Indians bought far fewer tonnes of gold, yet spent more rupees doing it. If you trade MCX gold futures, track USD/INR, or wonder whether Dhanteras buying can lift prices, this report matters. Below you will find what fell and why, how the 15% import duty and unofficial imports distort the data, what it means for MCX and the rupee, and a hypothetical ₹ example on Gold Mini and Gold Petal.

Why did India’s gold demand fall in Q3 2026?

India’s gold demand fell 29% year on year to 162.5 tonnes in Q3 2026 because record prices priced buyers out, the import duty jumped to 15% in May, and the weakest monsoon in over a decade hurt rural incomes. Spending still rose 3% to ₹2,41,900 crore because the average domestic price climbed about 45%.

The WGC’s average domestic price was ₹1,48,891 per 10 grams, excluding duty and GST. When a 10-gram unit costs almost half as much again as a year ago, the same wedding budget buys far less metal.

Rural India explains much of the rest. Reuters reported that rural areas account for over half of India’s gold demand, and 2026 brought the lowest monsoon rainfall in more than a decade. Sachin Jain, regional CEO of WGC India, told PTI: “we expect consumers to adapt through lighter-weight jewellery and exchange-led purchases.”

Tonnes down, rupee value up: buyers have not abandoned gold, they are buying lighter pieces at much higher prices.

India gold demand Q3 2026

How does India compare with global gold demand?

Globally, demand barely moved. The World Gold Council’s Gold Demand Trends Q3 2026 puts total demand, including over-the-counter (OTC) trades, at 1,369 tonnes, down 1% year on year. Year-to-date demand of 3,881 tonnes almost matches the 2025 record of 3,884 tonnes.

  • Central banks bought 321 tonnes, up 42%.
  • Gold ETFs took in 211 tonnes.
  • Bar and coin fell 19% to 268 tonnes.
  • Jewellery fell 17% to 313 tonnes, the weakest third quarter in WGC’s series.
  • The LBMA PM price averaged US$4,262/oz, up 23%.

India’s 162.5 tonnes was roughly 12% of global demand, and central banks and ETFs offset most of its weakness. So MCX traders should watch the dollar side first; our guide on how the US dollar index moves gold explains that link.

Import duty at 15% and unofficial gold imports: what changed?

On 13 May 2026 the government raised the import duty on gold and silver to 15% from 6% (10% basic customs duty plus 5% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess), according to Business Today, to curb imports and ease pressure on forex reserves. Bullion dealers warned that grey markets would revive.

They were right. Unofficial imports are gold that enters India outside formal customs channels, mainly smuggling, so no duty is paid. WGC’s net import figure fell 46% to 114.1 tonnes. Within that, official imports were about 64 tonnes (-70%), while unofficial inflows were estimated at about 50 tonnes against 3 tonnes a year earlier, per JewelBuzz’s summary of the WGC India report.

For traders, a higher duty lifts the rupee price of gold further above the international price converted at USD/INR. Our explainer on how India’s gold and silver import base price works covers the tariff value that customs uses to compute that duty.

India gold demand Q3 2026 MCX gold impact: what it means for traders

Weak Indian demand is a slow headwind; day-to-day MCX prices still follow dollar gold and USD/INR.

How MCX gold and silver moved on 3 November

MCX December gold closed at ₹1,40,186 per 10 g on Monday. On Tuesday it traded at ₹1,38,994 (-0.85%) by 10:40 IST, per Goodreturns, with a day range of ₹1,38,030–₹1,39,421 by 15:03 IST, per Upstox. By 19:14 IST, 5paisa showed ₹1,39,429 (-0.54%). MCX December silver fell harder, to ₹1,77,901 per kg (-3.2%) from ₹1,83,779.

Reuters reported spot gold at US$3,934.75/oz at 0024 GMT on 4 November (05:54 IST), and a 78% chance of a December Fed rate hike per CME’s FedWatch tool. Hike bets lift the dollar and weigh on gold.

The rupee arithmetic behind MCX gold

A rough landed price sanity-checks MCX quotes (one troy ounce = 31.1035 grams):

  • US$3,934.75 × 94.75 ÷ 31.1035 × 10 ≈ ₹1,19,864 per 10 g before duty
  • Add 15% duty: ₹1,19,864 × 1.15 ≈ ₹1,37,843 per 10 g

That is close to the MCX December quote; the gap reflects futures carry and local premiums or discounts. Every ₹1 move in USD/INR shifts this landed value by about ₹1,455 per 10 g, roughly a full day’s MCX range on 3 November (about ₹1,391).

Gold imports and dollar demand in USD/INR

Gold is a large contributor to India’s trade deficit, so bullion importers are big dollar buyers. Fewer official imports mean less visible dollar demand, mildly supportive for the rupee. The rupee settled at 94.75 per dollar on 3 November, its third straight gain, though still down 5.14% in 2026, per Business Standard. Dilip Parmar of HDFC Securities sees spot USD/INR in a 94.3–95.4 range near term.

The catch: smuggled gold is still paid for, just outside visible banking channels, so the rupee’s relief may be smaller than it looks. Indian residents can trade USD/INR only on recognised exchanges (NSE, BSE, MSE) through SEBI-registered brokers; leveraged forex on overseas platforms via LRS is not permitted.

Will Dhanteras 2026 and the December quarter revive demand?

Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November 2026 (puja muhurat 6:02–7:57 pm IST in New Delhi, per Drik Panchang), and Diwali on 8 November.

WGC’s view is cautious. Jain told Reuters he expects December-quarter demand to improve with festivals and weddings, but the WGC said high prices and a weak rural economy will likely limit that recovery. It projects full-year demand of 625–675 tonnes; Reuters put it at about 650 tonnes, the lowest since 2020.

Traders often expect a festive MCX rally, but festival buying shows up more in local premiums than in futures, which track COMEX and the rupee. See our note on gold trading during Asian hours for how IST mornings behave.

Example (hypothetical): sizing an MCX gold trade in ₹

Contract specs, per ICICI Direct and Rupeezy (confirm on MCX before trading): Gold Mini is a 100-gram lot quoted per 10 grams with a ₹1 tick, so each tick is worth ₹10 per lot. Gold Petal is a 1-gram lot quoted per gram, so ₹1 is worth ₹1 per lot. If points and ticks are new to you, read how to calculate pips and points in gold.

Example (hypothetical): a trader with ₹2,00,000 capital risks 1%, or ₹2,000, per trade.

  • Gold Mini: buy 1 lot at ₹1,39,400 per 10 g (notional ₹13,94,000). A ₹200 stop risks 200 × ₹10 = ₹2,000; a ₹400 target earns ₹4,000.
  • The problem: the 3 November day range was about ₹1,391, so a ₹200 stop is easily hit by noise.
  • Gold Petal: a ₹700-per-10 g stop equals ₹70 per gram. 2,000 ÷ 70 ≈ 28 lots, risking 28 × ₹70 = ₹1,960.

One Gold Mini lot is large for a ₹2,00,000 account in this volatility; smaller contracts allow a realistic stop within the risk rule.

How to read the WGC report before placing an MCX gold trade

  1. Separate tonnes from value. Falling tonnes with rising value means price-driven weakness, not lost interest.
  2. Check dollar gold first. Look at spot gold, COMEX futures and the dollar index.
  3. Check USD/INR. Each ₹1 is worth about ₹1,455 per 10 g.
  4. Rebuild the landed price. Dollar gold × USD/INR, converted to 10 g, plus 15% duty; compare with the MCX quote.
  5. Size in rupees. Fix the ₹ loss you accept, set a stop based on the recent range, and check margin with our forex margin calculator before choosing Gold Mini or Gold Petal.
  6. Mark event risk. US midterm results, the Fed’s December decision and Dhanteras.

What to watch this week and into December

  • US midterm results: still being counted on the morning of 4 November; a surprise can move the dollar and gold quickly.
  • Fed hike odds: any shift from 78% feeds straight into COMEX gold.
  • Spot gold support: Analytics Insight flagged the yearly low of US$3,870.23.
  • USD/INR: a break outside 94.3–95.4 changes your landed-price maths.
  • Crude oil: Reuters said oil fell about 1% on 3 November to a near four-week low; a rebound would pressure the rupee.
  • Duty changes: any cut would revive official imports.

A common mistake is reading “six-year low demand” as a sell signal for MCX gold. Indian demand moves local premiums far more than the international price.

FAQs

How much did India’s gold demand fall in Q3 2026?

India’s gold demand fell 29% year on year to 162.5 tonnes in July–September 2026, according to the World Gold Council. Jewellery dropped 20% and bars and coins fell 40%. The value of demand still rose 3% to ₹2,41,900 crore because the average domestic price was up about 45%.

Why is WGC calling 2026 a six-year low for India gold demand?

WGC expects India’s full-year 2026 demand at 625 to 675 tonnes, which Reuters described as about 650 tonnes, the lowest since 2020. High prices, the 15% import duty and the weakest monsoon in over a decade, which hurt rural buyers, are the main reasons.

What is the gold import duty in India in 2026?

The government raised the import duty on gold and silver to 15% from 6% on 13 May 2026. It comprises a 10% basic customs duty and a 5% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess. The aim was to curb imports and ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

What are unofficial gold imports and why do they matter?

Unofficial imports are gold brought into India outside formal customs channels, mainly through smuggling, so no import duty is paid. WGC estimates about 50 tonnes came in unofficially in Q3 2026, against 3 tonnes a year earlier. So official import data understates how much gold actually entered India.

Will gold prices rise on Dhanteras 2026?

Nobody can promise that. Dhanteras falls on 6 November 2026 and WGC expects some December-quarter pickup from festivals and weddings, but it says high prices and a weak rural economy will limit the recovery. MCX gold usually follows COMEX gold and USD/INR more than festive buying.

How does USD/INR affect MCX gold prices?

MCX gold is roughly the dollar gold price multiplied by USD/INR, converted to 10 grams, plus import duty. At a spot price near US$3,935 an ounce and 15% duty, every ₹1 move in USD/INR shifts the landed price by about ₹1,455 per 10 grams. A weaker rupee lifts MCX gold even when global prices are flat.

Conclusion

Indians bought 29% less gold by weight in Q3 2026 while spending 3% more, and part of the missing official imports moved into unofficial channels after the 15% duty. The India gold demand Q3 2026 MCX gold impact is therefore indirect: it shapes local premiums, import flows and dollar demand, while the MCX price itself keeps tracking COMEX gold, Fed expectations and USD/INR.
