Key points on flash PMI Forex

  • The UK composite PMI jumped to 53.1, an eight-month high, well above the 51.8 forecast.
  • The Eurozone composite slowed to 51.9, missing the 52.7 forecast, as France slipped back into contraction.
  • EUR/GBP fell to around 0.8360, a 17-month low. The US composite eased to 57.6 but stayed near a five-year high, with output prices rising fast.
  • Next up: the Fed (28 Oct), ECB (29 Oct), BoJ (30 Oct) and BoE (5 Nov).

Quick primer: a PMI (Purchasing Managers’ Index) is a monthly business survey. A reading above 50 means activity is growing, and below 50 means it is shrinking. “Flash” PMIs are early estimates based on about 80–90% of responses, released about a week before the month ends. That makes them one of the first signals traders get on the current month.

What happened

Economy (Composite PMI) October flash Forecast September Signal
United States 57.6 – 58.4 Strong growth, slightly slower
United Kingdom 53.1 51.8 52.0 Big beat, eight-month high
Eurozone 51.9 52.7 53.1 Miss; growth slowing
Germany 52.8 53.3 53.8 Miss; still growing
Japan 52.3 – 52.3 Unchanged
India (HSBC) 56.7 – 55.9 Four-month high
Australia 49.7 – 49.6 Just below 50

United States: The services PMI eased to 57.9, against 58.0 expected. Manufacturing rose slightly to 56.0 from 55.9. S&P Global said the output readings are consistent with GDP growing at a 5% annualised rate. Selling prices rose at the sharpest rate since August 2022.

United Kingdom: Both sectors beat forecasts. Manufacturing rose to 52.8 from 51.9, and services to 53.1 from 52.1. New orders grew at the fastest pace since September 2024, and firms added staff for the first time since then. S&P Global said the reading is consistent with 0.7% quarterly GDP growth.

Eurozone: Manufacturing eased to 52.4 from 52.9, and services fell to 51.7 from 53.0, both below forecasts. France slipped back into contraction after its first rise in 10 months in September. S&P Global said the composite is still consistent with about 0.3% quarterly growth.

Japan: Manufacturing fell to a seven-month low of 53.3, below the 54.5 expected. Services rose to 52.0 from 51.3. Job creation slowed to a 14-month low, and input cost inflation edged higher.

India: Services rose to 56.2, while manufacturing eased to 54.9. Overseas orders grew at the fastest pace in six months, and input cost inflation eased for the seventh straight month.

Why it matters

Currencies follow growth gaps. When one economy grows faster than another, its central bank is more likely to keep rates high or raise them. Higher expected rates tend to attract money into that currency. October’s PMIs widened the gap between a strong UK and US on one side and a slowing eurozone on the other.

Prices matter as much as activity. PMI surveys also measure the prices firms pay and charge. October showed strong cost pressures in the UK and sharply rising selling prices in the US. That supports the case for tighter policy from the BoE and the Fed. S&P Global said UK price pressures make a BoE hike next month a near certainty.

Market reaction

  • GBP: Sterling was the standout. EUR/GBP fell toward 0.8360, a 17-month low, after a near 3% four-week slide. The strong UK data reinforced expectations of a BoE rate hike in November.
  • EUR: The euro weakened against the pound on the eurozone miss and French weakness.
  • USD: The US flash was close to expectations, so the market reaction was limited. Flash PMIs usually move the dollar only when they surprise sharply or the price components shift.
  • JPY: Japan’s unchanged composite had little direct effect. The yen is trading more on BoJ expectations and risk sentiment ahead of the 30 October decision.
  • AUD: Australia’s composite stayed just below 50, a weak signal. AUD/USD is being driven more by China data and global risk mood.

Impact on Indian traders

GBP/INR: The UK beat supports sterling. That could lift GBP/INR, depending also on USD/INR.

EUR/INR: The softer eurozone data and French weakness are headwinds for the euro, which may weigh on EUR/INR. The ECB decision on 29 October is the next test.

USD/INR: India’s own flash composite rose to a four-month high of 56.7, with easing input costs, a positive sign for the economy. However, the rupee remains driven mainly by crude oil, the dollar and foreign portfolio flows. USD/INR closed at 94.82 (provisional) on 22 October.

Cross pairs on NSE: NSE lists USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR and JPY/INR, plus EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY. EUR/GBP is not listed, but its moves feed into EUR/INR and GBP/INR. Trading forex with unauthorised offshore platforms is not permitted under FEMA.

What to watch next

Date (IST) Event Why it matters
Wed, 28 Oct UK Autumn Budget  Fiscal plans could change UK growth and BoE expectations
Wed, 28 Oct, ~23:30 FOMC decision Strong US PMIs and rising prices support a hawkish Fed
Thu, 29 Oct ECB decision; Australia Q3 CPI Weaker eurozone PMIs may make the ECB cautious
Fri, 30 Oct BoJ decision A hold is expected, with focus on December
Mon, 2 Nov Final manufacturing PMIs Confirms or revises the flash readings
Wed–Thu, 4–5 Nov Final services and composite PMIs Same as above
Thu, 5 Nov BoE decision A hike is widely expected

Possible scenarios:

  • If final PMIs confirm UK strength and the BoE signals more hikes, EUR/GBP is likely to stay under pressure.
  • If the eurozone slowdown deepens in the final data, the ECB may lean cautious, which could weigh further on the euro.
  • If US price pressures show up in hard inflation data, the Fed may stay hawkish, supporting the dollar across major pairs.
